All the Peachtown students are studying birds right now. We have several bird feeders set around the school, and the children are keeping close track of visitors to the feeders. Art classes have been devoted to making all sorts of bird sculptures, drawings and masks and music students are even learning "Rockin' Robin."

Based on the review in the New York Times and a quick clip I saw on television, Mogel's approach to raising adolescents sounds very wise. She even includes one of my favorite adages as a handy rule for parenting: put the oxygen mask on yourself before you put it on the child.

Note from Bird…..

When I asked my classroom to create a reading list for other students their age, I was greatly surprised and wonderfully pleased with their choices. Their selections were the same books that had passed from hand to hand throughout the year. Our early morning conversations focused on, “How far are you now?” or “Have you read the part where…..?. I recommended a book to one student, only to find that it had made its way throughout the class within three weeks. Some students even arrived with copies from local libraries. The books they chose range from graphic novels and realistic fiction to steampunk and science fiction. Even better, is the fact that most of them are novels that are part of a series or by authors that have written many excellent books.

The following is the Peachtown Elementary School Student Reading List, brought to you by an eclectic group of fourth through eighth graders, with a variety of reading levels. I included an age range for the novels and made notes when I felt the themes in the novels were be better suited for older students. Over the years, one of the activities we have enjoyed as a class is reading a book together and then watching a film version to make comparisons. It fosters great discussions when the students talk about how they envisioned the book, compared to how it showed up on screen. While most of the books the kids chose do not fit into that category, I highly recommend this as a great family activity to keep your children reading over the summer. Read and watch it as a family. Want to see Thor for the first time (or again), grab The D’Aulaires Book of Norse Myths and check out the legends before you see them on the screen! As for the Boy Who Lived (Harry Potter), many of my younger students read the series for the first time this year, loving the elements that were left out of the movies and are eagerly anticipating the finale in July. At the end, I included a few novels for older readers and a few favorites that the students missed. Enjoy!

The Peachtown community is saddened by the death of Charlie Snyder. Charlie served Peachtown well as a Board Member, volunteer and longstanding contributor. His steady guidance helped move the school from a nascent idealistic organization into the stable effective school it is today. He took part in activities as diverse as walking a piano for the school up Route 90, to cutting out walls for expanded classrooms, to acting as a thoughtful advisor on many board committees. He will be sorely missed as a friend, colleague and role model. He was a "peach" of a man!

Preliminary findings of a follow-up research project, which originally followed Tennessee children from kindergarten to middle school, may have proved Robert Fulghum was right -- we really do learn everything we need to know in kindergarten.

The Starr Project
The Starr Project initially took place in Tennessee in the 1980's with the goal of discovering the effects of early education on future academic success. Like similar studies, the Starr Project discovered that smaller class size was better, teacher quality makes a difference, and most advantages of early education fade by junior high school.

Nothing new here, so we're moving along.

Fade Out Effect of Early Education
The fade-out effect is well documented. Simply put, the effects of early education tend to even out with most students ending up in about the same place academically by middle school, regardless of whether they went to pre-school or kindergarten. But it's a measurement based primarily on standardized test scores. Raj Chetty, a Harvard economist, wonderedwhat the effect of having a good, or great, kindergarten teacher might have on the actual lives of adults.

New Research
Tracking down nearly 12,000 of the children who participated in the Starr Project -- who are now hovering around age 30 -- Chetty and his researchers set out to measure the quality of their lives in terms of the type of kindergarten experience they had. What they found could change the current attitude about education and its importance.

Chetty discovered that students who learned more in kindergarten, all other factors being equal, were less likely to be single parents, more likely to have gone to college, and are saving for retirement. But here's what makes economists and politicians take note: the students, now as adults, were also likely to be making more money than their peers. Whatever they had gleaned from their kindergarten experience was paying off in terms of dollars and cents.

Implications
With the recession raging on, more and more stories appear in the media claiming education can't protect people in dire economic times. Chetty's study seems to prove this assumption wrong, based mostly on anecdotes. In fact, the research strongly suggests that a good early education is the best inoculation against hard times a society could create for its children.

The study has yet to be peer reviewed, but the initial findings have provided more compelling evidence to the idea that kindergarten teachers play a vital role in laying a child's educational foundation. In terms of value – with a child's eventual earnings as an adult being taken into account – a great kindergarten teacher is worth $320,000 dollars a year.

Autism, Allergies, Asthma, ADHD: An Integrative Approach to Your Child’s Diagnosis and Treatment

Peachtown Elementary School in Aurora will sponsor a presentation and discussion at the Auburn Public Theater at 6:00 PM on June 23. The free program focuses on an improved understanding of the diagnoses and possible treatments of autism, allergies, asthma and ADHD.

Dr. Marne O’Shea, an Ithaca area Family Practice M.D., and Stacey Weeks-Purdy, an Integrative Nutrition Counselor certified by the AADP, will discuss the diagnoses of these disorders and how treatment plans can be improved with an approach that integrates changes in diet and nutrition. Ideas for shopping and preparing foods are provided along with samples to taste!

The program is made possible by a grant from the Cayuga Community Fund.

Every year, Peachtown students celebrate Earth Day by clearing the Wells College lake shore of trash and other debris. This year their efforts were part of the Embrace the Lake Campaign sponsored by the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network and the Center for Environmental Sustainability. This project hopes to organize clean-ups of all the major creeks that empty into Cayuga Lake.

About Peachtown

Peachtown Elementary School is an independent non-sectarian day school for grades pre-K through 8, located on the Wells College campus in Aurora, New York. With an enrollment of 25 students and a student teacher ratio of 6:1, Peachtown offers a highly individualized educational program featuring: multi-age classrooms, global education, interdisciplinary curriculum, developmental approach, hands-on learning, foreign languages, swimming instruction, creative and performing arts. Peachtown was founded in 1990.

Our Philosophy

A Peachtown education promotes personal responsibility and self-reliance, as well as a sense of family, tolerance and community. Located in a former home, the informal setting creates a comfortable and secure environment. Children learn at a pace that challenges, but does not intimidate or bore. A close relationship with the Wells College community provides enrichment and diversity unusual to a rural school. College work-study students and education students work closely with Peachtown teachers.

Our Students

From all walks of life and of all abilities, from different ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds, Peachtown students form one cohesive community. Most students enrolled at Peachtown live within 20 miles of Aurora. Current students are from the Southern Cayuga, Union Springs, Auburn, Moravia, Lansing and Ithaca school districts.

Admission

Applications are welcome on a rolling basis. Admission is determined on a space available basis, as well as the child’s ability to benefit from a Peachtown education. Pre-kindergarten applicants should be at least four and one-half years old and deemed ready for a full-day program. School visits prior to application are encouraged. To arrange a visit or to request an application, please contact the school administrator.

Tuition and Scholarship

Scholarships are available for families demonstrating financial need. Families requiring assistance should apply for scholarship in the spring preceding enrollment. A variety of payment options are available, including interest free monthly payments and multiple child discounts. Current tuition charges are $5100 per year, with over 50% of the students receiving scholarships.

Schedule

In 2008, Peachtown moved to a four-day school week. Classes run from 9:00-4:30, Monday - Thursday; after school care, staffed by College students, is offered every school day from 4:30-5:30 for a nominal fee.

Transportation

Busing is provided by the home school district if the student lives within 15 miles of Peachtown or the district already buses to Peachtown. Carpools are often arranged between families.

Nondiscrimination

Peachtown Staff

Peachtown encourages cooperative learning for its students and cooperative teaching for its teachers and administrator. The teachers and administrator at Peachtown work together. Each teacher knows every student and has the opportunity to work, eat or play with them everyday. We have no substitute teachers, just fellow teachers.

The Peachtown staff is comprised of full time, part-time and adjunct teachers. Staffing is adjusted to accommodate the current student population with the goal of maintaining a 6

to 1 student/teacher ratio. The Lower Level classroom houses grades pre-K - 3 and the Upper Level classroom houses grades 4 – 8. Each of these classrooms has a lead teacher and may utilize part-time or full-time teaching assistants as enrollments warrant.

Peachtown teachers are hired based upon their talent for teaching. New teachers are mentored as they develop their skills in the classroom. Proven teaching ability and the academic rigor of their educational experience is valued above teacher certification. Due to the nature of the curriculum, teachers must be researchers and learners. Teachers may or may not hold state licenses.

Head of School, Music Teacher and Upper Level Math Teacher

Barbara Post, B.A. Wells College, Music; M.A. SUNY Empire State College, Social Policy, Education

Barbara, as the founder of the school, has spent 20 years working as the chief administrator of Peachtown and teaching music. For several years, she was the lead teacher in the Upper Level Classroom, and for the past 7 years, she has taught Upper Level math classes, including high school Math I.

Lower Level, Lead Teacher

Kathleen Button, B.A. SUNY Geneseo, Sociology, Elementary Education; M.S. SUNY Cortland, Early Elementary Education

Kathy has 18 years of teaching experience in public and private classrooms as well as Head Start. She retains her NYS permanent certification. Kathy has worked at Peachtown for the past 8 years

Upper Level, Lead Teacher

Anne (Bird Cramer), B.A. Wells College, Psychology, Education Minor; Graduate coursework in Speech Pathology

Bird has worked at Peachtown for 8 years. She worked previously with special needs children and developmentally disabled adults. Bird specializes in juvenile and young adult fiction and has brought her talent in theater arts to the annual Peachtown drama productions.

Adjunct Teachers

Peachtown has adjunct teachers in the fields of Reading Recovery, Art and Foreign Languages (French and Spanish) and other subjects, as needed. Weekly swim instruction and the After School care program are staffed with Wells College students.
